Councillors have approved plans for affordable homes on derelict land in Healey.

At Tuesday’s Kirklees Council’s Cabinet meeting, plans for land off Burnsall Road to be leased to social landlord the Home Group for the development 48 affordable homes were approved.

The company will build 22 two-bed homes, 17 three-bed homes and a block of nine flats for people with learning difficulties and complex needs.

Two of the flats will be suitable for wheelchair users.

The building work is phase three of the redevelopment of the estate.

The project began in 2005, with phases one and two of the project delivering 87 affordable homes.

However the final phase was delayed by negotiations to purchase one of the remaining houses on the land from its owner.

Cabinet member Coun Peter O’Neill (Lab, Batley West), said there was a definite need for affordable housing in Healey.

He said the building work would boost job creation not just on the site but also through the development’s supply chain.

“That could create as many as 800 new jobs so its really good news,” he said.

The Home Group will need to apply for planning permission before work can begin.
