Police still hunting for cannabis growers from disused Batley surgery

ENQUIRIES continue into a former doctor’s surgery found to house £100,000 of cannabis.
The Undercliffe Surgery in White Lee closed when the new Heckmondwike Health Centre opened in July 2010 and was left empty after doctors moved to the new facility.
In March, a large-scale cannabis operation was discovered by police after people were seen removing the plants from the building.
Witnesses saw people removing plants from the building in the early hours of the morning and called the police, who seized around 650 plants worth £100,000.
Officers found cannabis plants strewn across the back yard and found a back door had been forced open.
Police found six rooms full of plants at different stages of growth, and another six rooms of equipment.
It appeared people had been sleeping and eating there.
Insp Tim Holland described the haul as a significant find of the more potent form of cannabis, known as skunk.
He said the large amount of unopened bags of soil found in the building indicated that the offenders planned to cultivate the Class B drug at the disused surgery for some time.
It appeared that plants, lighting and other equipment were removed from the building prior to officers arriving, he added.
A 25-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of burglary and drugs offences but was released from bail without charge on July 25.
An NHS Kirklees spokeswoman said the primary care trust believed the building had been sold by the former practice after it moved to the new Heckmondwike Health Centre.
Witnesses and anyone with information can contact police via 101.
