School top of value table

It was smiles all round at an all-girls school after it topped the secondary school league table for pupil progress.
Batley Girls’ High School, in Howden Clough, scored above the national average to bag the top spot in Kirklees for its value added score.
The score measures the progress pupils make during their time at secondary school.
When pupils begin their secondary school career, their Key Stage Two SAT results are used to calculate an initial score.
This is then compared with a similar score calculated from the pupil’s best eight GCSE results, to measure how much progress they have made from Key Stage Two to GCSE.
An overall value added score is then calculated for the school, with a national average of 1,000.
Separate scores are also given for progress made by different groups of pupils, including pupils with special education needs and pupils from different ethnic groups.
Batley Girls’ took the top spot after scoring 1,036, almost nine points higher than Mirfield Free Grammar School, who came second with a value added score of 1,026.6.
Headteacher Jackie Eames said she was delighted with the result.
“It’s even better this year than last year,” she said.
“In the local authority we’ve always been one of the highest achieving schools.
“It’s about every single student and the difference you make.”
She added: “In our value added scores there isn’t a single group that hasn’t made exemplary progress, all the scores are well above 1,000.”
Batley Business and Enterprise College came 14th in the Kirklees league table in terms of its value added score.
The all-boys school in Batley Field Hill had a score of 1,003.2, also above the national average.
Free school Batley Grammar School, in Carlinghow Hill, came in 19th place, with a below-national-average score of 991.6.
The school that received the lowest value added score in Kirklees was Earlsheaton Technology College in Dewsbury, with a score of 960.2.
Heckmondwike Grammar School came top of the table for its 2012 A-Level results, with all 272 of its A-level students achieving three or more A level passes.
The school also topped the GCSE results table, with 99 per cent of pupils passing five or more GCSE’s at grade A* to C, including English and Maths.
Its value added score was above the national average at 1,023.3.
