Shahid Malik rules himself out of Dewsbury MP role
Breaking news...
Former Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik will not contest either of the Dewsbury seats proposed by the Boundary Commission.
Mr Malik said his decision was out of respect for the two sitting MPs.
Under proposals announced by the Boundary Commission for England, the current constituency of Dewsbury and Mirfield could be split into two. Mirfield would be a constituency with Dewsbury West parts of Batley and Spenborough and Dewsbury East, which includes the town centre, would be in a new constituency with parts of Wakefield.
Mr Malik said that under Labour party rules, Mary Creagh would be viewed as the sitting MP for the Dewsbury and Wakefield West seat, and that Mike Wood would be viewed as the sitting MP for the Mirfield seat.
Mr Malik said: “If I had any hope of coming back to serve the people of Dewsbury I am sad to say that under the current proposals I would not to do so out of respect for my former colleagues. Both Mary Creagh and Mike Wood are excellent MPs and it would be wrong for me to challenge either.
“Dewsbury has always been a single town with one MP and the splitting of the town is nothing short of a disgrace.
“My love for the town however will not wane and it is for this reason that I will continue to expose the hypocrisy of this Tory led coalition government.”

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 06:52 PMTinkylee: I didn't call you (or anyone else) a racist, or even imply it. Think you might be a bit sensitive about that one? Or maybe just trying to avoid engaging with the facts and the real arguments by making out people who don't agree with you must just some kind of loony who goes around shouting 'racist' at everyone? Your words: "My problem with Malik is I just don't trust him." That's your opinion and you are fully entitled to it but if everyone else felt the same then how do you explain how he won all the Dewsbury wards comfortably? How was it that even with huge and unfavourable boundary changes he still only lost very narrowly overall? Or ignore boundary changes. How did he manage to get more votes overall in 2010 that in 2005? Sorry to sound like a broken record but you seem unableunwilling to explain.

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 01:26 PMAdams apple...I didn't say I'd met him once...I met him on a few occasions and I trust my own judgement very well and I'd also like to say for the record my comment was in no way racist or heading that way.I come from Ravensthorpe and we all know that it's now very much a multi cultural place.I have many asian friends who have been my longest and most faithful friends. My problem with Malik is I just don't trust him and if you lose that trust then how can you possibly vote for him.Can I ask what your thought's are on purchasing personal item's out of tax payers money. If he himself didn't think he was doing something morally wrong then why did he pay it back.I as a labour voter and who actually voted for him in the past felt like I'd been stabbed in the back and robbed.

Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 12:04 PMsorry malik haters but you can ignore the facts all you like, they are still facts. look at the huge way in which the boundary changes transformed the constituency. the people who voted malik out lived in kirkburton and denby dale. the vast majority of these people had never even heard of malik. or you can totally ignore the boundary changes if you like. if so then how do you explain the fact malik got 2000 more votes in 2010 than in 2005? malik won all three dewsbury wards comfortably. none of it really backs up your narrative does it? i can fully understand why supporters of other parties dislike him so much: because he actually had the balls to attack other parties and speak out on issues. sometimes he was right and sometimes he was wrong but it was better than the completely anonymous politicians dewsbury have had before and since. even in losing the election he was attacking reevell for being a part-time mp. people said it was sour grapes but guess what? he was dead right! tinkylee and robbie prost your argument is basically "i met him once and i thought he was a crook". i think everyone can see that says more about you that it does about him. take for example your suggestion that he is like gadaffi. completely bizarre. read the article above: malik is bowing out and leaving of his own choice. isn't this this is the exact opposite of gadaffi?

Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 10:14 AMTinkylee - well said, and those are my feelings exactly about Malik. Steve - If you read what I put, it is Malik who is the first for the race card when he is losing an argument. My opinion was formed of Malik when he 'Hijacked' a meeting [OAP's] I was attending, nobody invited him and he left the platform with less votes the next time around than if he had never attended. I think it's just sour grapes on your part Steve as you didn't get your candidate elected, that man disgraced himself and people voted with their feet to remove such a deeply unpopular MP.

Monday, October 10, 2011 at 10:37 PMHas a hard working person who's lucky enough to never have been on the dole, also to have voted labour because "my parents always have"....and to have lived in Ravensthorpe for the best part of 30 years before moving out to Mirfield..I feel I just had to comment on the Malik story....I met the man himself and I believe I'm quite a good judge of character, that said....I found him arrogant, underhand, rude,a liar and if anyone was a racist I'd say it was him.Lets not forget that that man stole from the people who put him into power by claiming for thing's that were not ligitimate and then having us taxing paying citizan's pay for these. What a creep and if he ever decided to try to come back to Dewsbury I hope someone who do us a favour and run that man out of town....He makes my blood boil !

Monday, October 10, 2011 at 09:22 PMYou see Ronnie - give you enough rope and the truth comes out - "Race". Now that's your word and it sums you up! Racist stereotypes and lies about 'bungs' - you little biggot. You are the real nightmare that decent people of different colours and races and faiths in west yorks have to live with. You stick with the BNP and EDL - the very fascists who people like my granddad gave his life for fighting against in defence of our country.

Monday, October 10, 2011 at 07:35 PM[MY NIGHTMARE] Malik comes back to Dewsbury, and Malik actually scrapes home...OH GOD five more years of bungs, underhandedness and pulling out the race card whenever someone actually gets the better of Malik. [ I WAKE UP ALL A LATHER & REALITY KICKS IN ..BOUNDARY CHANGES] I say to myself, Ronnie, stop worrying, as the boundary changes put paid to Malik ever getting back in as our MP...PHEeeewwwww.

Monday, October 10, 2011 at 06:56 PMThere's nothing terrible about Tory villagers - as decent as the next village, however, if you're an urban labour supporter you may not appreciate their voting patterns if they are forced upon you, especially when they themselves want to have nothing to do with Dewsbury. Nothing envious, bitter or divisive about that. Indeed the only bitter comment seems to come from Ronnie who I note you have not mentioned - I wonder why? In the words of Mr Cameron "calm down dear" and sorry we've run out of tea..

Monday, October 10, 2011 at 05:34 PMThose terrible Tory villagers, eh! Class enemy ... politics of bitterness and division ... envy. I hear where you're coming from Steve. Tea with 2 sugars please, and make it sharp.

Monday, October 10, 2011 at 03:52 PMYou can like a person or not - you can even patronise them but I find the facts are usually helpful Ronnie. I appreciate you may not like the truth but here it is: 1. Malik and Labour actually won the town of Dewsbury at the General Election in 2010 but were outnumbered in population terms by Kirkburton, Mirfield and Denby Dale resulting in the new Dewsbury constituency going to the Tories (as it did in 1983 when the same boundaries were introduced). The Tories were saved from defeat by these boundary changes that brought in Kirkburton and Denby Dale wards (26 mainly Tory villages) - where none of the 6 councillors are Labour and got rid of Heckmondwike where all 3 councillors are Labour. 2. Even people that don't like Malik concede that he was the hardest working MP the town has ever had. I think a coffee wouldn't harm you either............

Monday, October 10, 2011 at 12:46 PMWhat makes Malik & Gadhafi so similar ....? Both think they are loved by the people, and in Malik's case he better step aside out of loyalty to the standing Labour MP's. It is just unbelievable of Malik to think that people just forget about his expenses Faux Pas's [and election defeat], and would come flocking back to him with their votes ... a cup of strong coffee generally helps Mr Malik.
