PUPILS in years five and six at St Patrick’s School have proved themselves sporting stars after qualifying for the finals of a prestigious school sports championship.

The youngsters competed against other schools in Batley and Dewsbury, and came away victorious in the North Kirklees School Sport Partnership.

Their win will take them to the finals, which are being held in Huddersfield on Tuesday and will see them facing pupils from schools across the borough.

They will be joined by second place finalist Bywell Junior School in Dewsbury.

A team of 20 pupils from the Nova Lane school took part in several track and field events, including relays, obstacle races, long jump and javelin at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre last week.

And although they won many of their events, for the pupils taking part was just as important.

Pupil Sophie Walton, who collected the school’s trophy after the event, said: “It was really good and exciting to be there and to have won.

“Mostly we are all about friendship and teamwork, and that’s what matters.”
