Time to save your energy

NOT enough people are switching their energy suppliers to get the best deal.

That’s according to Kirklees Citizens Advice’s Chris Fitzsimmons, who will be on hand for all energy queries at Batley Resource Centre on Tuesday.

Chris’ visit is part of the Kirklees Citizens Advice Energy Best Deal initiative, which aims to give homeowners a package of support to get the best deal from energy providers.

He said: “We want to widen awareness of the fact that you don’t have to stick with the supplier you’re with. Even if you’re in debt you can still switch.

“We want to help people who may be more vulnerable than others, like those who are on a low income, have a large family, are disabled or are single parents. But that’s not to say we won’t be helping others too.”

Chris, a financial capability trainer at Kirklees Citizens Advice, said he would also offer general money advice to those who need it, though the focus would be on energy matters.

“People often ask me which is the best company to go with,” he said.

“But the truth is there’s no such thing. They’re all pretty rubbish really; they’re all as bad as each other.

“The best thing people can do is look into switching supplier, which on average can save you £300.”

Chris said it was important that people researched their energy before signing up to a supplier.

“There are a lot of companies out there like uSwitch to help with this sort of thing,” he added. “Just by looking into it you’re making a step in the right direction towards saving a large amount of money.”

Chris said it was also important to ask providers why their bills were so high and what could be done to bring the bills down.

“They’re not going to do it unless you ask,” he said.

“I think a lot of people think when they talk to these companies they are subservient to them, but they are paying the company so they deserve to be getting the most from that service.”

Chris will be at the resource centre in Commercial Street from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
