TRAVELLERS have left Batley – only to move to another car park just two miles away.

Last week the News reported that travellers camped in the Field Lane long-stay car park were due to be evicted by county court bailiffs on Friday.

They had previously been evicted from the Wards Hill short-stay car park just metres away.

The group left the council-owned car park last Thursday evening and moved down to The Mill shopping village in Bradford Road, during its extended opening hours.

But the retail outlet was able to evict the camp quickly after the private security firm that monitors its CCTV secured a 24-hour eviction notice, a spokeswoman revealed.

Mick North, who runs MJ North Butchers at The Mill, said the camp had moved on by Saturday morning after an eviction notice was served on Friday.

The travellers are now in the car park at Dewsbury Rail Station in Wellington Street, just two miles away.

Kirklees Council is having to begin eviction proceedings once more after court orders obtained for traveller evictions at the rail station earlier this year were found only to apply a to different group. A court hearing will take place on Monday.

Meanwhile, Field Lane car park (pictured) has been the subject of a council clean-up operation following the travellers’ departure.

Piles of carrier bags, stolen shopping trolleys and a children’s tricycle were dumped around the edges of the car park, while discarded cables were piled up at the entrance.

A height restriction bar was dismantled so that the caravans could be towed into the car park and has yet to be repaired.

The council cleared the car park on Tuesday but the cost of the clean-up is not yet known.
