Vandal’s car axe rampage

A ‘MAD axeman’ attacked cars in a quiet street in the middle of the night.

An axe is thought to have been stolen from a house in Almond Way, Brownhill, in the early hours of last Thursday morning, and used to smash the windows of four cars in the space of just 10 minutes along the road.

One of the victims said: “Everyone up here is pretty cross.

“This is normally quite a quiet area; no mad axemen around.

“It’s one thing for a mindless vandal to go around smashing up cars in an act of violence; nothing was taken from them, I don’t think. But what if someone had approached them while they were going around carrying that axe and smashing car windows?

“They could have, whoever it was, hit someone with an axe.”

Police say the damage to the cars was caused between 2am and 2.10am on September 6.

A spokesman confirmed an axe was involved, which had been recovered at the scene.

He said the tool formed part of the police investigation into the incident.

The victim, who asked not to be named, said the first he knew of the crime was when police knocked on his door at around 3am.

“I saw the back door of my car was smashed, and three other cars along the street had similar damage to mine,” he said.

He has since managed to get the damage repaired.

The police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to get in touch.

Anyone who lives nearby and has CCTV cameras which may have captured what happened may also be able to help with the investigation.
