A rallying cry has gone out for volunteers to support the transfer of a leisure centre into community ownership.

The three officials on the Howden Clough Community Centre board are hoping to take ownership of the leisure centre from Kirklees Council.

And they are now looking for younger volunteers to help ensure move goes through.

Community member John Logan said: “We have been discussing it for around a year.

“When you read about the council cuts, if Kirklees cannot afford to run public toilets then it begs the question where the community centre is on their priorities.

“We want to get younger members on board and put together a plan to make the transition happen.”

The community centre, based in Leeds Road, runs a variety of classes including, tae kwondo, dog training classes and junior football training sessions.

The two other committee members are John Murgatroyd and Susan Edwards.

Mr Logan said the group believed the centre was a resource that should not be lost.

He said: “Fashions and needs change over the years but we have always had different play groups and youth groups holding sessions at the centre. It is all about getting the right additional trustees for the centre and them seeing it through to the future.”

Anyone interested can attend a committee meeting at the centre on Tuesday April 29.
