PLANS for a multi-million pound regeneration of the Blakeridge Mills site have been revealed.

Binks Developments Ltd have submitted a planning application for a supermarket, petrol station and 181 apartments on its 10.75 acre site.

The company wants to transform the derelict Blakeridge Mills building into luxury apartments as well as installing a swimming pool and gym.

If the plans are approved by Kirklees Council, the regeneration could create a number of new jobs in construction as well as in the supermarket.

Richard Binks, owner of the site in Blakeridge Lane, said the family firm were keen to develop the site.

He said: “This application is giving Batley a chance to be the jewel in the crown of North Kirklees. Batley has fantastic road and rail connections and one of the finest market squares in Yorkshire.

“Taylors Mill is 150 years old this year and we want to recycle it and give it another 150 years watching over Batley.

“So many Batley people have a story to tell about these mills, we want to do them justice.”

Around 120 people are already living in apartments in the smaller mill buildings and the development could see around 500 people living in the development.

Mr Binks added: “I honestly believe that this application is one of the best things to happen to Batley in recent years.

“This major investment will not only create jobs but will allow us to restore these beautiful mills to their former glory.”

Residents have until Monday February 25 to give their views on the application on the Kirklees Council website.
