Budding bakers are being asked to fire up their ovens for a nostalgic competition.

The Great Batley Vintage Bake Off will see amateur bakers go head to head to create delicious cakes before a grand final at Batley Vintage Day.

Following the success of the Batley Business Association’s (BBA) Great Batley Mince Pie Bake Off, the association is hoping to deliver some sweet treats to its vintage event on May 31.

The competition, sponsored by Brearley’s Solicitors, has three categories, including one just for under-16s.

The two open categories are carrot cake and scones.

Bakers can use any recipe they wish and are free to choose their own theme or variations.

The third category, for bakers aged 16 and under, is a Yorkshire curd tart.

The tart must be made to a set recipe, which is available from the Brearleys Solicitors offices in Brunswick Street, Batley and Market Place, Birstall, and from the Reunion Cafe in Branch Road, Batley, along with entry forms for the Bake Off competition.

The BBA is planning a free demo of the preparation and baking of the traditional recipe at the Reunion Cafe in the coming weeks.

The closing date for entry forms is May 16 and entries must be delivered to the Batley Business Association gazebo at Batley Vintage day by 11am.

BBA Chairman Andrew Marsden said: “All three categories will be judged on taste, presentation, style and consistency of bake by a distinguished panel of local judges.

“The competition is free to enter, with prizes for the winner of each category.

“The final judging will take place at Batley Vintage Day and the winners will receive their prizes live on stage.”

Batley Vintage Day is hoping to bring a taste of yesteryear to the market place and memorial gardens with a day of live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, sports and a vintage market.

The BBA was awarded a grant of £11,915 for the event, which hopes to build on the success of Batley Festival.

The free event will also support Batley Food Bank, with visitors encouraged to ‘bring a tin to get in’.
