A trader who sold a car to a Batley customer, despite having failed its MOT, has been fined £1,200.

Liaquat Ali, trading as ABC Bargain Cars and AB Bargain Cars of Alexandra Road, Leeds, was also ordered to pay £1,900 prosecution costs.

Leeds Magistrates Court heard that in January 2013 Ali sold an X registered Fiat Punto to a buyer from Batley, and although it was advertised as taxed and tested, it had failed its MOT test a few days earlier. The customer was left paying for the MOT and repairs when Ali refused to do anything to assist.

Ali also faced other charges relating to cars with false odometer readings, and one which was an insurance write off. He denied all responsibility to Trading Standards Officers, saying a relative had run the business.
