LETTER: Game shows the unity that exists

My father played for Staincliffe Cricket Club before and after the First World War and I played for the club in the 1960s.

It was therefore a great privilege when Mount Cricket Club, whose home is at the old Staincliffe ground, invited me and my wife to attend the games of cricket and festivities connected with the visit of the cricket team from the Vatican in Rome.

All those involved saw at first hand the warm friendship and unity of spirit and purpose of the two teams and their supporters.

Never were the words “far more unites us than divides us” more appropriate than to the Mount Club’s wonderful initiative which provided a perfect example of how communities can come together and share their faith and experience.

For me the highlight of the visit was the final game, under floodlights at Headingley - the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

As a Yorkshire member it was a wonderful sight to see the two teams cheer each off the field after a close-fought game played to a high standard.

We all felt that we had become fully fledged members of the Mount Cricket Club family and much credit goes to Hanif Mayet and his fellow trustees for their hard work and imagination in producing a truly outstanding programme of events.

I feel sure that the community spirit displayed by the club will take cricket at Staincliffe forward for another hundred years.
