LETTER: Paper missed out former PM's link to Kirklees

I am sure by now that many readers will have seen the article in the March 7 edition of the Daily Express.

The article states he was educated at home until the death of his father Joseph when Herbert was only seven.

What the article fails to mention, and I am sure this is what will interest your readers, is that after the death of his parents and from the age of seven he was brought up by his maternal grandmother, Mrs Willans of Mirfield.

For 18 months, from 1859 to 1860, he was educated at the Wellhouse Moravian Church school in Mirfield, which was day school and boarding.

From there he went to the Fulneck Moravian Church School, possibly as a boarder from October 1861 to April 1863, from there to the City of London school before he attended Balliol College Oxford.

In a Fulneck magazine of 1888 it states, “he did not enjoy his time at Fulneck and later in life when he was invited back to visit, he chose never to return”.

I attach a picture of the Mirfield Historical Society Plaque which is on the outside of our Church wall showing the information of those notable people who attended or who were associated with the church.

Rev. Kenneth G. Evans, Retired Minister of the church
