AN article in the News has brought back memories for former pupils of a Hanging Heaton school.
On December 17 we published a picture of the Mill Lane School football team in 1949. The picture was brought in by reader Jack Calvert, who found it when he was rooting through cupboards at home.
Jack was a member of the team alongside Trevor Watson, a sports reporter for the News, and was interested to hear if any of his colleagues from that year were still around.
The photograph was taken after the team won the Batley Primary Schools' football trophy.
Reader Brenda Worsnop (nee Ibbeson) was in the same class as the boys pictured and remembers them all.
"They were all in my class. I don't remember the football team but, hey, I was a girl. What did you expect?"
Brenda, who now lives in Halifax, said she remembered Mr Goodhall, a teacher mentioned in the original article who founded the football team.
Her dad was a caretaker at the school and her mum a cleaner in later years, when Mr Shackleton was headmaster.
She said: "I have a lot of memories of Mill Lane School. It was such a blast from the past!"
Reader Albert Bye was a pupil at the school in 1940 and remembers some of the boys photographed in the football team picture.
His younger brother Trevor Land, who spent years as chairman of Batley Boys and chairman of Yorkshire Rugby League, was pictured. Mr Land sadly passed away in November 2008.
Mr Bye, who was from Hanging Heaton but now lives in Gildersome, also met Trevor Schofield several times at Bradford Northern ex-players' dinners but Mr Schofield also died in 2008.
