THE race for the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division title looks set to go right down to the final game of the season after leaders Wrenthorpe and second-placed Birstall recorded maximum six-point wins last Saturday.
Wrenthorpe required less than 29 overs to complete a 10-wicket win over relegation-threatened Scholes and remain two points clear of Birstall with two matches remaining.
Although Scholes openers Nahim Ashraf (13) and Mark Hydes (17) produced a 22-run opening wicket stand, all 10 wickets then fell for just 28 runs as they were dismissed for 50 in the 17th over.
Overseas man Dinusha Fernando claimed 6-27 from nine overs, while Neil Gill ended with 4-20 from eight.
John Inglis became the first CYL batsman to reach 1,000 league runs this season as he ended 39 not out, while fellow opener Eric Austin made 11 not out as Wrenthorpe completed victory in just 11.3 overs.
Defeat leaves Scholes rooted to the foot of the Premier Division, 11 points adrift of safety and looking certain to be relegated.
Birstall maintained the pressure on the leaders with an impressive 86-run victory over Mirfield Parish Cavaliers at Wellhouse Lane.
Rob McFarlane was in sensational form as he smashed 146 in a 173-run opening wicket stand with Connor Williams.
McFarlane plundered the Parish attack to all parts of the ground before he was out with 22 overs still remaining.
Williams went on to make 121 before being bowled by Alex Scholefield, while Vikram Rathour (48) and Mick Kaye (24) also shone as Birstall ended 345-5 from their 50 overs.
Parish gave the run chase a real go, with Scholefield (67), Dave Jackson (60no) and Michael Padgett (30) leading the way but in a dramatic finish McFarlane claimed the final Parish wicket from the last ball of the game to earn his side maximum points.
McFarlane ended with 4-39, while captain John Carruthers ended with 4-78 as Birstall kept in touch with the leaders.
Batley have slipped into the relegation zone following a 61-run defeat to Townville.
Despite captain Tariq Hussain leading Batley with 4-55, Townville made 188-9 as Matthew Baxter (58), Peter Hepworth (32) and John Rickers (25no) all impressed.
Batley were reduced to 81-8 in reply before Tariq Hussain gave his side hope with 29 but they were eventually dismissed for 127 as Salman Fazal Khan claimed 3-18.
New Farnley gave their survival hopes a real boost with a 120-run victory over Ossett.
Tom Suggitt (64) helped Farnley reach 172 all out, despite 6-35 from Charles Orme before the visitors dismissed Ossett for just 52 with Nick Johnson claiming 5-29.
Batley are four points behind third-bottom Farnley and the two sides meet at Mount Pleasant on the final day of the season.
Northowram Fields moved above Batley after picking up a bonus point against Methley.
Liversedge remain seventh in the table following a four-run defeat to Wakefield Thornes.
Liversedge were well beaten by Thornes in last month's Jack Hampshire Trophy final but fared much better last Saturday as captain Simon Purdy (5-53) and Josh Tingle (3-54) helped restrict the visitors to 155-8, despite Sam Tee (47) top scoring.
Zulqarnain Haider appeared to be guiding Liversedge to victory with 54, while support came from Steve Blackburn (23) and Richard Soulsby (22).
Last man Steve Wright was dismissed off the final ball of the innings trying to hit the winning runs as Liversedge ended 151 all out.
