HAVING failed in their bid to reach a first Heavy Woollen Cup Final in 53 years, Birstall must re-focus their attentions on the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division title race as they entertain Wakefield Thornes on Saturday (start 1pm).
Birstall produced a fine effort before going down to Yorkshire League outfit Barnsley in last Sunday’s semi-final but they will have been buoyed by some good fortune in last Saturday’s league games.
While Wrenthorpe’s clash at Townville ended in a rain affected draw, Birstall managed to complete a maximum points victory over New Farnley and close the gap at the top to just three points.
Batley travel to Methley on Saturday looking to build on last week’s victory over Scholes.
That win helped Tariq Hussain’s men move five points clear of second-bottom sideNorthowram Fields and Batley will hope that the confidence gained from their win over Scholes will give them a boost.
Were Batley to deny Methley any points from the game and Birstall beat Thornes at Leeds Road, John Carruthers’s side will be guaranteed a place in the play-offs.
Woodkirk will be looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Birstall A when they entertain East Ardsley A in Division Two.
Depleted Hanging Heaton face two Bradford League Division One games over the weekend as they welcome champions Woodlands to Bennett Lane on Saturday before travelling to bottom side Brighouse on Sunday (matches start 1.30pm).
Heaton will be waiting to hear if pace bowler Imran Arif will be released to play by his new county Worcestershire, who are involved in a County Championship game against Middlesex at Lord’s.
It would be a much-needed bonus if he were to play as Heaton are down to the bare bones bowling-wise and last Saturday had four second teamers leading their attack, which was plundered for over 300 at East Bierley.
Heaton face a stern test in Saturday’s clash against champions Woodlands, they will have earmarked Sunday’s game at Brighouse as one they are capable of winning against a side who have lost all their games which beat the weather.
