George Healey 0
Queensbury 2
By Andrew Hunt
GEORGE Healey's hopes of winning four trophies this season were dashed as they lost to Queensbury in the Mark Hawkins Memorial Trophy final at Liversedge last Friday.
A hectic schedule, which has seen George play several midweek games, looked to have taken its toll as they were lethargic and could have no complaints at the outcome.
Queensbury were livelier and created a host of chances, while George rarely threatened, even after pushing four men up front late on.
Queensbury took a deserved 40th minute lead and could easily have added further goals but found goalkeeper Anthony Howarth in inspired form while centre-back Phil Temple was George's best player, marshalling his defence.
Queensbury's Chris Hodgson blazed an 82nd minute penalty over the crossbar and although George had been on the back foot for most of the game there was always the chance they could nick a goal.
Their fate was finally sealed two minutes from time when substitute Chris Brown broke through and calmly slotted the ball past Howarth.
Matt Clough had a terrific first half for Queensbury and was a constant threat with excellent runs and crosses before he was carried off injured early in the second half.
Winger Brad Gilbert also had a terrific game and he was deservedly named man-of-the-match.
George had the ball in the net after eight minutes but Richard Tomlinson was ruled offside after latching on an Andy Smith header.
Marcus Render headed Gregg Ormandroyd's goalkick straight back but Tomlinson chipped into the goalkeeper's arms, while a Render corner was looped towards goal by Ash Parkinson but the ball hit the top of the crossbar.
These were rare attacks from George as Queensbury created the better chances. A Clough cross from the right was gathered by Jamie Simpson-Wood, who played it across goal and when Clough tried crossing again, it struck a defender on the arm but appeals for a penalty were waved away.
Five minutes before half-time Queensbury took the lead as Gilbert went on a jinking run into the area before laying the ball back for Simpson-Wood to drill beyond Howarth into the bottom left corner.
Simpson-Wood then fired over after more good work from Gilbert before drilling a shot straight at Howarth having been sent one-on-one by a lovely Clough pass.
Queensbury seemed unfazed despite the loss of Clough and continued to dominate after the break.
Simpson-Wood blazed over following a well worked short corner, while Daniel Scrimshaw curled a free-kick over the George wall but Temple got back to head off the goalline.
Howarth produced a fine one-on-one save to deny Hodgson and keep George in the game but they were failing to threaten at the other end.
Queensbury had a glorious chance when Brown was tripped inside the area but Hodgson blasted the penalty hopelessly over the crossbar.
Hodgson's blushes were saved when Brown sealed victory as he played a ball past the defence and raced through to gather and fire home.
