Shaw Cross Sharks: Under-11s celebrate as Under-9s hold on for a top draw

SHAW CROSS SHARKS
The Under-11s held on to earn a well deserved victory over a physical Upton side.

From the kick-off the Sharks went on the attack with good yardage being made by Shaw, Redgwick, Lyles, Hooley and Lumb ending with Cameron Benson scorching down the
wing for a try, converted by Luke Hooley.

Quick hands by Carter, Hooley and Benson allowed Ben Ripley to to score.

Upton hit back with a well taken try.

From a scrum Sharks’ quick-thinking Scott Carter darted down the blindside to score a try, goaled by Hooley.

The Cross defence of Ripley, Kelly, Hooley, Shaw, Carter and Benson held out to half time.

Upton resumed with all guns blazing to score two converted tries.

Good forward play by Lyles, Ripley, Redgwick and the sidestepping of Lumb took the Sharks within range for Thomas Shaw to score a tprop’s try, converted by Hooley.

There was good supporting play from Kelly, Powell, Evans and Blackburn.

Issac Haley enjoyed his finest game so far.

MoM was Luke Hooley, Top Tackler was Thomas Shaw, Most Improved Connor Redgwick,and the Star Achiever Issac Haley.

The Under-9s visited Castleford Panthers and from the start they ran hard and defended strongly against the big team.

The skilful young Sharks had the Panthers on the back foot and strong drives forward from Eddie Sampson, Luke Slack, Thomas Ashen and Tenneson Neagle gained the ground for Stephenson to dummy and step through for his first try.

Jack Flynn ran with determination and Most Improved winner Liam Rush provided the support with a quick play the ball that saw GameBreaker Logan Stephenson bounce off a tackle and sprint in for his second try.

MoM Joshua Pinder provided some big tackles while Top Tackler Levon Heaps scampered about and scoot to dive over for his try.

Jamie Hartley, Elis Longstaff and Thomas Howarth proved their worth with some cracking tackling and Harry Foster pushed the team forward. Kaylumb Williams worked tirelessly in defence.

In the final five minutes the Panthers pressed forward for four consecutive sets as the game ended in a 16-16 draw.

The Under-9s held their presentation night on Friday with Leeds Rhinos’ Lee Smith and Danny Buderus and Bradford Bulls’ Wayne Godwin and Nick Scruton attending to present the trophies. Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson, Warren Jowitt and Steve McNamara all sent special best wishes video messages for the young Sharks.

The winners were:

Most Improved Player: Levon Jay-Taylor Heaps

Clubman of the Year: Luke Slack.

Player of the Year: Logan Stephenson.

Strongman of the Year: Joshua Pinder.

Gamebreaker of the Year: Tenneson Neagle

All the team were presented a Squad award.
