BATLEY Bulldogs have had a double setback with Kris Lythe and James Archibald set to need knee operations.
Coach Gary Thornton said the scans the pair have had revealed some sort of tears and it was now up to the surgeon to decide what action to take.
It is hoped both players will be available for the later stages of the Northern Rail Cup group games but they are obviously ruled out for the Boxing Day Challenge.
Thornton said: “The injuries hit us hard because we have such a small squad.
“Whether we can bring in cover for them I don’t know, otherwise we shall just have to knuckle down and cope without them.”
The Bulldogs head for the North East this weekend for a two-day camp. The trip will include walks and training on the beach and proved very popular with the players and coaches at this time last year.
There seems to be a swing by some Co-operative Championship clubs towards Friday night football.
Sheffield Eagles have played on a Friday for some time but Widnes will be joining them this season as will Halifax. At least the Halifax home game against Batley is on Good Friday.
But Thornton remarked: “It can make it difficult for part-time players. Lads have to take time off work for these away trips and it means they are losing money. It can be a tricky situation.”
While the Co-operative fixtures have been announced, there is no sign yet as to which games will be selected by Sky television for their Thursday night matches and this too will have an effect.
