Cadets wing their way to victory
DEWSBURY Air cadets raced their way to glory at the South and West Yorkshire Wing Cross Country Championships, held at Barnsley Rugby club.
Twelve cadets raced over the three-mile course. Maximum effort was given by every runner, giving 96 (Dewsbury) Squadron it’s best results in years.
Cadet flight sergeant Rebecca Harpur, 16, from Shaw Cross won the Senior Girls race for the second year running and with other senior girls, Sara (16) and Semeen Sakharkar (15), Dewsbury Squadron won the Team trophy, meaning gold medals for all team members.
The Junior Girls team, made up of 14-year-old Gemma Foster, Antonia Gifford and Emily Pinchbeck, both 13, all from Ossett, and Phoebe Dawson (13) from Dewsbury, then made a tremendous effort, coming first in the team standings to win the trophy and team gold medals.
The Junior Boys team of Chris Freeman, 15, from Thornhill, Pranay Ballijepalli,14, Oliver McGreevy, 14, and Callum Evans, 14, all from Dewsbury, won team bronze medals. Freeman finished fourth in the individual race.
The other Squadron representative, Adrian Cooke, 15, from Thornhill, was their only entrant in the Intermediate Boys event and finished a creditable 13th.
This exceptional effort resulted in 96 (Dewsbury) Squadron coming overall fifth, out of the 33 Squadrons in South and West Yorkshire Wing.
The Squadron is next recruiting on Monday, March 8. Boys and girls aged 13 years and above can apply.
If you are interested in joining 96 (Dewsbury) Squadron, you can participate in a wide range of sports from cross country, athletics, kayaking, rock climbing etc, and also have the opportunity to fly with the RAF, gain gliding qualifications, take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and gain up to six GCSE’s.
