Female refs pass with flying colours
A GROUP of teenage girls passed a two-day referees course with flying colours this week.
The 12 teenagers, who all play in the West Riding Girls League, were put through their paces by FA Level Two licensed referees tutors Dave Fuller and Dave Ward at the Batley Enterprise College on Monday and Tuesday.
The two-day practical basic course for new referees saw girls come from across the county, including Halifax, Bradford, Huddersfield and Leeds and all passed to become qualified referees.
Mr Fuller said: “All the girls were very enthusiastic. They took a lot of interest and we got some of the best results in any course we have held over the last five years.
“All the girls play for various clubs but some look very promising referees.”
Much of the course was spent out on the field when aspects such as positioning at throw-ins, corners, goalkicks and free-kicks were covered, along with how to manage a wall, cautions, sendings off and running the line.
Jane Simms, who is the North East Women’s FA ambassador also spent time talking to the girls.
Jane, who officiates on the EvoStik Premier and Blue Square North Leagues, is one of just four English female assistant referees who has been accepted onto the FIFA list.
