Hanging Heaton earn remarkable Heavy Woollen Cup win

HANGING Heaton completed one of the most remarkable Heavy Woollen Cup victories in history on Thursday night when they defeated Barnsley by 18 runs at Bennett Lane.

Heaton started the Barnsley innings with only seven players on the field and although Haroon Rashid arrived after around 10 overs, they had to play the remaining overs with just eight men.

Heaton only used one leg side fielder for most of the innings but despite huge gaps, they overcame the odds to progress.

Opening bowler Nick Bresnan was taken ill and only managed to bowl six of his allotted 10 overs before being forced to take over as wicketkeeper from James Stansfield.

Barnsley appeared cruising to their target of 261 at 113-1 and 172-2 but Hanging Heaton staged a remarkable fightback.

Barnsley only required 89 runs to win from the final 18 overs but captain John Carruthers and Ryan Senior produced some excellent bowling to peg Barnsley back.

Carruthers finished with 5-44 from 8.5 overs, while Senior chipped in with 3-45 from seven as the last six Barnsley wickets fell for just 38 runs and they were dismissed for 243.

Rashid (62), Vikram Rathour (46), Rob McFarlane (45), Bresnan (37no), Mark Lawson (34no) and Stansfield (22) were the leading Hanging Heaton score of 261-6.

Victory means Heaton will now travel to either Kirkburton or Skelmanthorpe in the semi-finals as they aim to reach their first Heavy Woollen final in a decade.
