Heaton wary of Jaffer HW Cup threat

HANGING Heaton must combat the threat of Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer if they are to reach the Heavy Woollen Cup final.

Heaton visit double-chasing Skelmanthorpe in Sunday's eagerly awaited semi-final (1pm) and captain John Carruthers is well aware of the threat Jaffer poses.

The Indian international hit a century against Heaton as Spen Victoria won the 1998 final and Jaffer, 32, has almost 2,000 Test runs.

Jaffer has already scored seven centuries this season and hit 81 as they reached the Huddersfield League's Sykes Cup final with victory over Scholes last Sunday.

Leaders Heaton, who will seek to bounce back from defeat by Bradford League Division Two title rivals Lightcliffe with a trip to Spen Victoria on Saturday (1.30pm), have the added cup incentive of knowing they are hosting the final on Yorkshire Day (August 1).

Birstall will be hoping last week's terrific effort against Central Yorkshire League Premier leaders Wrenthorpe will provide them with confidence in their battle to pull clear of the relegation zone.

Zafar Khan had Wrenthorpe in trouble as he claimed 4-44 to have them reeling on 103-9 before Wrenthorpe's last pair managed to stumble to their target.

Birstall remain six points clear of second-bottom Liversedge ahead of Saturday's home game with mid-table Wakefield St Michaels (1pm).

Batley are just two points above Liversedge, following last week's eight-wicket defeat to Methley but they will be hoping for better fortunes when Altofts visit Mount Pleasant.
