BULLDOGS coach John Kear was delighted with his side’s display in their 42-20 victory over Leigh Centurions last Sunday.

Kear described the performance as one of the best since he took over as Batley moved level on points with second placed Halifax and just two behind new Co-operative Championship leaders Featherstone Rovers.

Kear said: “We started a little tentatively. They got up our end twice and scored two tries but once we started to believe in our ability, we played some really good rugby league.

“I was more pleased with the second half display than the first. When you have the advantage of the wind and hill, you have the get out of jail card with a big boot downfield.

“We worked hard to get into good field positions and we were clever with our play.

“I was really pleased with our half-backs, who showed composure to move play around. Even when we went behind, they didn’t panic.

“The forwards were also tremendous and worked hard but the whole team did well to outwork the opposition.

“We are two-thirds through the season and are in a pretty good position and we will now look to finish well.

“We have improved since game one in the Northern Rail Cup and although we have had one or two little blips, we are a much better side now and I’m really pleased with these players, who want to improve as individuals and as a team.”
