Khan reaches national boxing semi-final

CLECKHEATON Boxing Academy’s Ismail Khan will compete for a place in the National Schoolboys final this weekend after a convincing display in his quarter-final last Saturday.

Khan, who is in the 40kg Class Three category, overcame J Fairclough of Runcorn to set up his semi-final, where he will meet Amir Khan (Small Heath Club, Birmingham) in Gorton, Greater Manchester.

The semi-finals will be held over Saturday and Sunday.

Yorkshire champion Khan, who lives in Beeston and used to box for the Burmantofts Club, led Fairclough 19-1 on points after two rounds and such was his convincing victory, that the final winning margin was not announced.

Another Cleckheaton boxer Kabeer Khan lost narrowly on points in his 44kg Class One National Schoolboys quarter-final against P Birkenhead of the highly-rated Rotunda Club in Liverpool.

Keith Tate’s gym, in Bradford Road, is open each weekday evening and is regularly attracting over 40 young boxers.

Danny Hargreaves, 20, made a winning return to the ring after 18 months out, when he defeated home fighter C Noon at a show in Harrogate.

Leeds University student Ashley Vanzie, who also trains at the Cleckheaton club, is gearing up for a tilt at the Senior ABA’s early next month.

Vanzie’s performances have already attracted attention from some big name promoters in the professional ranks.
