Liversedge bounce back to earn terrific victory

Liversedge bounced back from their midweek defeat to AFC Mansfield by thrashing Armthorpe Welfare 5-0 at Clayborn last Saturday.

Sedge could have hit double figures but for an inspired display by the Armthorpe goalkeeper as Jon Rimmington’s men got their Northern Counties East League Premier Division campaign up and running.

Vaughan Redford volleyed home Joe Walton’s knock down a to put Liversedge 1-0 up after 29 minutes but they were unable to extend their lead before half-time.

Rhys Davis cut in from the right and drove the ball home early in the second half before Walton headed home a cross.

Tom Jackson reacted to a knockdown in the area to score with an overhead kick before a misunderstanding between defender and goalkeeper allowed Steve Wales tap into an empty net and complete the rout.

Liversedge opened their NCE League account with a 3-2 defeat at AFC Mansfield last Wednesday.

Redford fired over an early chance before Ryan Williams curled a free-kick into the top corner for Mansfield.

Redford missed a penalty and Oliver Fearon then headed home Mansfield’s second.

Walton pulled a goal back and the Mansfield goalkeeper made several top saves to keep his side ahead at half-time.

Rhys Davis raced through and equalise in the 52nd minute only for Mansfield to restore their lead through a Gary Bradshaw header.

Sedge created numerous chances in the final quarter but were unable to equalise as Mansfield twice cleared shots off the goalline.
