Martial arts coach earns seventh Dan

TAE KWON DO coach Scott Hammond is the youngest person in the UK to achieve a seventh Dan black belt – one of the highest accolades in the sport.

The 37-year-old runs the West Yorkshire Martial Arts Academy, based at Batley Sports Centre, twice-a-week and he has coached over 50 people to reach black belt status.

Scott began training in 1979 at the age of six and has also attained black belt status in other martial arts during this time, including Tang-Soo-Do, Han Kuk Moo Do kickboxing, Wado-Ryu and freestyle Ju-Jitsu.

Scott, who lives in Wakefield, had to wait seven years from completing his last grade at Tae Kwon Do to this new attainment.

To achieve seventh Dan, Scott had to through a vigorous two-day assessment, which included several written exams as well as practical application in various techniques, in front of the British Tae Kwon Do Martial Arts Union (BTMU) senior panel, which the West Yorkshire academy is affiliated to.

The West Yorkshire Martial Arts Academy is a family oriented club who train between 7-8.30pm on Thursdays and 6.30-8pm on Sundays.

All instructors are CRB checked and fully insured, while the academy also has a child protection policy in place.

Tae Kwon Do, Korea’s national sport, is also an Olympic sport and one of the most practiced and recognised martial arts in the world.

As well as his Tae Kwon Do group, Scott also runs Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) classes at Lightwaves Leisure Centre in Wakefield on Mondays between 7.45-8.45pm and at the MST Academy in Sheffield on Tuesdays from 7.30-8.30pm.

For further information on any of Scott’s classes contact him on 07970 052149.
