Moore equals record as Bulldogs cruise to cup win

Batley Bulldogs 70 Leeds Met University 6 By Richard Pickering

GARETH Moore bagged a record-equalling 30 points in a game as Batley Bulldogs ran in 12 tries to secure an easy victory last Sunday in their Carnegie Challenge Cup third round tie.

The scrum-half scored two tries and 11 goals to equal the points in a game record set in March 1995 by Simon Wilson, who scored a try and 13 goals in the 78-22 league demolition of Leigh.

Moore was at the hub of many good moments for the Bulldogs who never really looked back after scoring three tries in the first nine minutes to lead 16-0.

Batley had to shuffle their pack just before kick-off as prop Jon Simpson chipped a bone in an ankle in the warm-up. Mark Toohey stepped up from the bench to start and he touched down in the second minute after neat handling by Paul Handforth and Moore, who landed the first of seven conversions from in front of the sticks.

Batley moved right and Craig Potter and Toohey combined to send Mark Barlow over. Moore's only miss of the afternoon saw the touchline kick drift just wide before Handforth and John Gallagher set up Eddie Kilroy who touched down near the right corner.

It took the Leeds Met students 11 minutes before they crossed into Batley's half but spurred on by stand-off Jamel Coleman and tricky scrum-half Nigel Scott, they pinned Batley back and Barlow had to be alert to pounce on a Scott grubber near the line.

Batley stormed downfield and a Danny Maun break on the left gave Chris Buttery a 40-yard run to the line but the students responded well and Barlow was forced to concede a drop-out after Steve Gibbons had been tackled on the home line.

The Bulldogs' fifth try came in the 24th minute when Kris Lythe, Handforth and Jonny Campbell linked in the shadow of the posts before Dave Tootill spun out of a tackle to crash over.

Four minutes later they made it 34-0 as good handling by Lythe, Moore and Handforth set up John Gallagher to score behind the posts.

Ash Lindsay injected new drive from the bench and as the hooter sounded Handforth's neat grubber was scrambled to safety by Ashley Huck.

Four minutes after the break a Lindsay dart punctured the students' defence before Handforth sent Campbell over for a try and Moore's sixth goal made it 40-0.

Three minutes later Moore took a pass on halfway and sliced through for a converted try before Ian Preece was denied by scrambling defence.

Leeds Met's spirited display was finally rewarded in the 53rd minute when second row Kristian Hodson powered over to the right of the posts and Nigel Scott added the goal, but soon after Campbell broke from inside his half to score his ninth try of the season and see Batley reach the half-century.

Good handling by Coleman and Hodson gave John Paxton the chance to touch down at the corner but the score was ruled out because the impressive winger had put a foot in touch while they went close again when huge substitue Ben Parker was held on his back over the line.

Campbell was denied a hat-trick try as Met centre Nick Walker snapped up a pass on his line but four minutes from time Moore darted over and his goal made it 58-6.

Lee Greenwood, who only took his place on the bench after Simpson's late injury, then came on and poor tackling saw him race over for a try in the 80th minute. Moore converted and he was on target again when Lindsay made a great break from halfway as the hooter sounded to send Greenwood clear to score near the right corner.
