Shaw Cross honour 'Stevo'

FORMER Shaw Cross player Mike Stephenson has been made an honorary life member of the club.

Stevo received the framed certificate at the Sharks’ annual sportsman’s dinner at the club when140 people saw club secretary Douglas Hird present the Sky rugby league pundit with the award as he recalled his early career at the club. Mr Hird described Mike as one of the greatest players to come through the Shaw Cross Boys’ Club ranks and thanked him for his support of the club.

Stevo won a League Championship with Dewsbury in 1973 and was joined by some of his former team mates. Nigel Stephenson, John and Alan Bates were present and the latter celebrated his birthday with a cake and candles handed over by chairman Chris Smith.

Other speakers included Bradford Bulls stars, Steve Menzies and Andy Lynch, while comedy was provided by Lee Roberts. A charity auction of rugby league memorabilia by Mick Turner was also part of another successful evening for the club.
