Shiekh century as Heaton break duck at champions
IT HAS taken 10 games but Hanging Heaton finally gained their first Bradford League Division One victory of the season on Sunday, winning at champions Woodlands by 44 runs.
The cornerstone of their success was former Scotland opener Qasim Shiekh who hit a fine century as they totalled 271-4.
Shiekh and Vipnial Manikoth (32) put on 128 for the first wicket before Amar Rashid (30) offered good support.
Shiekh hit 20 fours as he made 114 from 115 balls before falling to Sarfraz Ahmed (2-44) while Ismail Dawood took 2-87.
James Stansfield (30no) and Mark Lawson (34no) added 64 to see Heaton to a challenging score.
Scott Richardson and Sam Frankland gave the hosts’ reply a firm foundation of 61 before Frankland (34) fell to Lawson.
Mohammed Sharafat (2-20 in 11 overs and four maidens) removed Dawood (10) and Tim Orrell (13) before Lawson (3-60) turned the screw to dismiss Pieter Swanepoel (13) and Adam Goldthorpe to leave Woodlands 140-5 in the 34th over.
Richardson’s defiance was ended on 40 by Rashid (1-48) and when the dangerous Ahmed (1) went second ball to Manikoth (1-32) as the hosts were 182-7 in the 42nd over.
Umar Salim (40no) and Richard Spittlehouse (20no) stood firm in the final overs but Woodlands closed well short on 227-7.
On Saturday Farsley had stolen a march on Heaton in the race to beat the drop with a 47-run win.
Lorenzo Ingram’s left arm spin caused the damage as Heaton were 128 all out in reply to Farsley’s 175-9.
Despite the efforts of Amar Rashid, who top scored with 40, and Vipinal Manikoth (20) Ingram claimed 8-43 in 14.5 overs as Heaton slumped to a ninth loss.
Farsley’s total was built around the efforts of Shabbir Rashid (38), captain David Syers (37no) and Ashley Metcalfe (27). Former Farsley leg spinner Lawson took 4-42 while Sharafat took 4-45.
Heaton now stand 22 points adrift of third-bottom Cleckheaton.

On Saturday they gained a seven-wicket home win over Morley in a high-scoring clash.
Morley posted a challenging 242-7 with Rob Lintin-French and Andy Hayward sharing in a 131-run second wicket stand.
Linton-French made 56 while Hayward top scored on 61 before Ash Daley (53) and James McNichol (34no) added 78 for the seventh wicket.
Umar Rehman took 3-49 and Michael Smith 2-65 while there was a wicket each for Nabeel Hafeez and Andy Nettleton.
After Michael Royce (20) fell, Howard Ellis and Dave Lawrence put Heaton on track with a 108-run stand.
Lawrence blasted 72 from just 48 balls, with eight fours and five sixes, until Andy Cutt (1-50) struck while Ellis made 61 in 81 balls, including seven fours, before falling to Richard Winn (1-22).
Nabeel Hafeez continued Heaton’s charge with 71 not out as they reached 245-3 in the 46th over.
Sunday saw Heaton gain a six-wicket home win over Cleckheaton.
Chris Dyer (46) top scored as the visitors were dismissed for 102 with Nabeel Hafeez taking 5-26 and Rehman 3-20. Heaton then eased to 103-4.
