Stainburn stars as Vic cruise to Senior Cup win

Birstall Victoria 56 Methley Royals 6

THE benefits of playing regular games against teams of a high standard in the Yorkshire Premier Division were shown when Victoria met Division One strugglers Methley in the first round of the Fred Marshall Senior Cup at White Lee.

Methley kicked off and Victoria swept down field and before the visitors had handled the ball Jonny Stainburn and Ben Copley scored tries and Mick Dyson added a goal to give the Vic a 10-0 lead.

A Gareth Scott try, converted by Dyson, extended the lead before Methley responded with a try and goal.

Dyson and Simon Render added tries, both converted by Dyson, and the Vic led 28-6 at half-time.

The home side doubled their score in the second half without conceding any further points.

Player-coach Craig Stevens scored a try as did Dave Dyson, while Scott and Copley each scored their second.

Stainburn went on to complete his hat-trick and Mick Dyson added two more goals.

In an all-round encouraging team display, with some attractive rugby played, Victoria’s man-of-the-match was Ben Copley with good games from Rob Copley and Scott.
