Sykes is crowned British champion

By Andrew Hunt GARY Sykes recorded a sensational victory over Manchester's Andy Morris to win the British super featherweight title at Huddersfield Sports Centre last Friday.

There was little to chose between the boxers following 12 gruelling rounds but 26-year-old Sykes, from Dewsbury Moor, had done enough to earn a unanimous points decision, which sparked jubilant scenes among his 700-strong support.

Many pundits at ringside described the contest as the best domestic fight in recent years, while referee Ian John-Lewis praised both fighters. Not once did he have to break the two fighters up.

Sykes was behind early in the fight as Morris got the upper hand but the Dewsbury man battled on, repelling everything his opponent could throw at him.

As the fight wore on Sykes showed superior strength and forced Morris onto the back foot.

The final two rounds saw both men go hammer and tongs but Sykes finished the stronger. At the end, both were given a deserved standing ovation.

There were several anxious moments before the decision was announced but Sykes was deservedly awarded the fight 116-113, 115-114, 115-114.
