Bingham leads Batley Boys fightback to seal away win

Batley Boys maintained their excellent start in the Yorkshire Men's League Premier Division with a fourth straight win, as they overcame Beverley 30-22 last Saturday.

Batley began slowly following a two week lay-off and had to fight back from 10-0 down as man-of-the-match Adam Bingham scored 14 points from a try and perfect kicking record of five goals from as many attempts.

The first half hour saw Beverley came make a terrific start as they scored two tries.

The Boys created a host of chances themselves, despite having Josh Whitehead sent to the sin bin following a dangerous tackle.

Batley’s forwards got them back into the game as Matthew Sheridan, Gav Davies, Azza James, Josh O’Sullivan and Ryan Crossley led from the front.

Bingham had a hand in the first try as he offloaded to James, who sent Whitehead over to score.

Bingham then darted through a gap to set up another Boys try and his two conversions edged the visitors ahead only for a penalty goal to level the game 12-12 at half-time.

Batley started the second half confidently as great work came from James and Bingham, along with Luke Sheridan set up Matthew Sheridan to score before Jay Jay Price added a try following a great handling move involving six players.

A kick from Knowles was chased and the tackle forced an error for Knowles to score as the Beverley defence stood still to watch.

Batley’s defence to stood tall with Davies and Sheridan, along with Knowles and Crossley, making some strong tackles before Beverley eventually broke through with two tries in the final 12 minutes.

Bingham intercepted a pass and raced 60 metres to cap a MoM display.

He missed a drop goal attempt soon after but the travelling Batley Boys support went away happy.

Price and Gav Davies followed Bingham in the MoM standings.

Batley host East Hull on Saturday (ko 2.30pm) and Sharlston on Friday May 26 (6.30pm).
