Two Batley Bulldogs Girls players have been selected to represent Australian school champions Merrimac State High, who are to tour New Zealand in September.
Bulldogs Girls captain Evie Kilburn and scrum-half Millie Taylor impressed when the Bulldogs made a historic tour of Australia last year and have been invited to represent the Australian School champions, who will face their New Zealand counterparts and also enter the Beach Sevens tournament at The Bay of Plenty.
Evie and Millie were shocked to learn of their selection, which gives them chance to showcase British girls rugby.
While on tour the girls will be coached by ex-Manly NRL player Dave McCall, while Bulldogs ladies and girls coach Craig Taylor has also been selected to assist on the tour,
The girls now face a frantic race to raise money to fund their trip.
Merrimac High School are also fundraising for the girls and have been given a signed shirt from rugby legend Jonathan Thurston to raffle.
Bulldogs community coach Craig Taylor said: “The news was a complete shock to the girls, their families and the club but it is an opportunity too big to miss out on.
“The girls are frantically fundraising to ensure they can get to Australia for the tour. The tour of New Zealand is heavily subsidised by the NRL but the same financial support is not available in England so the girls are funding the trip themselves.”
