Review: BATS showcase brought plenty of razzle dazzle to town hall

For fans of musical theatre, it doesn’t come much better than an evening packed with the biggest showstoppers performed by a cast determined to give the audience a great night.

Batley Amateur Thespian Society has been around since 1913 and still draws in the crowds for its highly entertaining shows.

And there was plenty to enjoy with its latest musical showcase, BATS on Broadway.

Packed with high energy performances, superb solos and well-crafted ensemble numbers, it took in hits from Oklahoma (1948) right through to All Shook Up (2005).

A rousing version of Bloody Mary made sure the tune was firmly stuck in my head for days, while newcomer Gemma Fowler impressed when she led the company in My Fair Lady’s Wouldn’t It Be Lovely.

Chicago’s Cell Block Tango sizzled as the six female singer on stage relished the chance to be devilish before a superb performance of Barnum’s Come Follow the Band led by Gareth Jones finished the first act on a high.

Highlights of the second act include the company number of Oklahoma led by Bob Burns, newcomer Daniel Mann in Money and the two Hairspray numbers, which brought real fun to the proceedings.

The evening closed with The Best of Times, a fitting choice that showed the wonderful team work of the entire cast that had been a hallmark of the evening.
