Variety Club to take centre stage as TV producer returns to Batley

Roger Keech, who produced programmes on the famous club for the BBC and ITV, is joining Batley History Group at Batley Town Hall on Monday for a special event dedicated to the former Bradford Road venue, which is now the Frontier.

Mr Keech was responsible for Batley, King of Clubs and another programme that paid tribute to club owner James Corrigan, and will talk about his involvement with the club and show film clips and photos of the stars that trod its boards.

He worked for the BBC for 21 years before turning freelance in 1999.

Also expected at the meeting is former club manager Alan Clegg, club staff, and people with memories and memorabilia from the club’s glory days.

History Group chairman Malcolm Haigh said the club, which opened in 1967, put Batley firmly on the entertainment map by featuring top stars from all over the world.

“People love reminiscing and I’m sure there will be plenty for people to recall with this subject,” he said.

The History Group meeting will be free for both members and the public. Refreshments will be served from 7pm and the meeting will begin at 7.30pm.
