The cash, approved by Kirklees Council’s decision-making cabinet last week, will go towards improvements such as new roofs, electrical equipment, heating and lighting systems, and access for children with disabilities.

Around £3m has been earmarked for specific projects, with £1.2m set to be allocated to other works over the coming months. The council says much work is being planned to take place during school holidays to minimise the impact on pupils and staff.

David Shepherd, the council’s strategic director for growth and regeneration, said it would be “a huge undertaking” to complete projects in so many different buildings during the six-week summer break “but that’s our commitment”.
