Dewsbury's cycling routes set for funding

Plans to improve Dewsbury’s cycling and walking networks have been endorsed by West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA).

It comes after Government suggested all regions should develop active travel plans after recently pledging £250 million nationally to boost the scheme, making it easier for people to walk and cycle.

However, a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure initiative for Dewsbury ground to a halt due to lockdown after plans were drawn up before the coronavirus pandemic hit the region.

Kim Groves, chair of the authority’s transport committee, said: “The districts are getting on with developing schemes, but that funding hasn’t reached local government at this point, and there is no indication of when that funding will come.

“We hope these schemes will enable more people to walk or cycle short, every-day journeys.”
