Injury to the brain caused by stroke and other neurological conditions can lead to widespread and long-lasting problems. The rehabilitation process is so important to help these patients back to as normal life as possible.

The redesigned ward is dementia friendly, more modern and spacious, with a new layout, new windows and new fittings and sanitary ware in en-suite, accessible toilets and wash rooms.

In addition, the new ward includes therapy rooms, treatment rooms and a heatwave room, and redecoration throughout with artistic feature walls and sensory lighting, all of which provide a more welcoming and comfortable ward environment for patients and staff.

Jo Halliwell, the trust’s deputy chief operating officer and director of operations, said: “During the design process we worked really closely with the matrons on the wards, and our clinicians, to ensure we are providing our nursing teams with an environment and layout that enables them to give the best patient care possible.

“The investment in Dewsbury Hospital is significant and the new look wards are fantastic. We can’t wait for our patients to see just how much we have transformed them.”

This refurbishment is part of the trust’s continued commitment to Dewsbury Hospital. It plans to invest more than £30m in the renovation and upgrade of systems and facilities over the next 13 years.

Chief executive Martin Barkley said: “The trust is committed to continuing to provide excellent patient care to our patients at Dewsbury Hospital.

“The redevelopment of these wards, to provide these excellent facilities for stroke and neuro patients receiving rehabilitation, is the next step in our plans to ensure we can continue to do this.”
