Birstall factory explosion latest - blast at Mars Petcare
A MAN was injured in an explosion at a Birstall factory this morning.
An oil-powered boiler at Mars Complementery Petcare in Oakwell Way exploded at 10am on Thursday morning, while an engineer was working in the factory’s boiler room.
He was hurt and treated at the scene by paramedics, who were called by the fire service.
A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: “One male sustained very, very minor injuries. He was checked over at the scene and not taken to hospital.”
Mars denies anyone was injured.
A spokesman for the company, which makes Pedigree dog food and Wiskas cat food, said: “Mars Petcare can confirm that there was a small blowout in one of the boiler rooms of its Birstall factory this morning. Nobody has been injured.
“The premises were evacuated as standard, but the building has been declared safe and everyone is back to work.”
People working in the warehouses near to the factory described how they heard a ‘big bang’.
Ady Mace works at ICM over the road.
He said: “I thought it was something going off downstairs as the whole building shook.
The pictures were left swinging on the walls and some staff even took shelter under their desks, fearing the worst!”
The site was evacuated for around an hour.
