It gave the go-ahead to axe Red House Museum in Gomersal and Dewsbury museum in Crow Nest Park, in a cabinet meeting this afternoon.

They could close as early as next month.

The council said it faced “severe cutbacks in government funding” and had to make more than £530,000 worth of savings to its museums and galleries budget by next April

The Friends of Red House Museum campaigned against the closure, which comes as it celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charlotte Bronte.

And Dewsbury East councillor Cathy Scott fought to protect Dewsbury Museum from getting the scrap.
