Wasps Nest Court was decided for the road where 12 houses have been built between Nab Lane and Farrar Avenue in Mirfield.

The site was once home to the Wasps Nest pub, leading many to contact Kirklees Council with suggestions for the street which included Honey Pot Lane, Wasps Nest Court and Honey Bee Drive – developer Sands Limited’s suggestion.

The builders were unhappy with many of the “wasp” ideas because of their connotations, and might therefore put potential buyers off.

But the decision was left to the Dewsbury and Mirfield District Committee, with Coun Kathleen Taylor proposing the final title on Tuesday.

She said: “I feel very strongly about our heritage. I don’t think any of us are so taken by a name that they wouldn’t buy a house there.”

Fellow councillor Vivien Lees-Hamilton(Con) said: “As councillors we don’t just have a duty to our residents, we have a duty to maintain our heritage – 200 years that site has been known as the Wasps Nest.
