Charity at risk after losing council contract

A charity may not see its centenary year after losing a council contract, according to its members.

The Society for the Blind of Dewsbury, Batley and District did not have their rehabilitation contract renewed by Kirklees Council.

The decision will see the centre open only three days a week from October.

Nineteen members of staff at the centre, which has been open for 95 years, have also been given voluntary redundancy notices.

Members and volunteers are worried the news may lead to the closure of the centre.
