West Yorkshire’s police and crime commissioner, Mark Burns Williamson, launched the latest round of the Safer Communities Fund at the beginning of this month, and local charities, organisations and groups are now invited to apply for a share of the £140,000 pot.

Each grant - up to £5,000 is available per applicant - has been seized from convicted law-breakers under the Proceeds of Crime Act in the force area.

Since the scheme began, £850,000 of confiscated cash has been re-distributed to 191 community groups and projects in West Yorkshire.

“There is an incredible demand for funding to pay for community projects from a very diverse and varied audience across West Yorkshire, which will help people be safer and feel safer,” said Mr Burns Williamson.

“I would urge any organisations or groups that feel they meet the criteria for the grants to apply. We have helped some very worthwhile causes in the previous years and I hope this year will see more.”

Successful bidders will receive their grant at a special community presentation event.

Applications can be made online at www.westyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk before September 25. A bid must meet the criteria set out in the force’s Police and Crime Plan.
