Bins are a real steel for thieves

SCRAP metal dealers are being asked to keep their eyes open following a spate of steel litter bin thefts.

In just four weeks, 72 bins were stolen across Kirklees.

It is thought they were taken to be sold for their scrap metal value.

The total cost of the thefts stands at £16,000, and the council said it was trying to replace as many as possible.

A council spokesman added: “However we are continuing to work with the police on this matter and would urge anyone with information to get in touch as soon as possible.”

Coun David Sheard, cabinet member responsible for bins, said: “These thefts hit all our residents in the pocket as the bins need to be replaced.”

Arrests have been made in connection with the thefts but police currently do not have enough evidence to bring any charges.

Coun Sheard, said: “I would urge anyone with information which might lead to identification to come forward as soon as possible.”

Police think two vehicles are being used in the thefts, one is a white Mercedes with a sliding door, and the other is a drop side transit van with a white cab and blue back.
