Date set to help little Sam walk

A little boy who wants nothing more than to run around the playground with his friends may soon see his wish come true.

Hopton Primary School pupil Sam Bottomley, six, is due to undergo an operation (which will help him walk independently) at Leeds General Infirmary on September 4.

The Sam’s Wish to Walk campaign has raised nearly almost £50,000 since January as the operation is not available on the NHS.

The operation costs £15,000 – and the rest will pay for crucial physiotherapy in the years that follow.

Sam’s mum Karen said: “Although we are very nervous about this we are delighted and overwhelmed by the support we have had from the people of Mirfield and cannot thank them enough. We never thought it would happen so soon.”

Recent fundraising events included a sponsored walk, organised by Roger Leedham of Upper Hopton Community Association, which raised £522, and a charity ball hosted by Rugby League professional John Bentley and his wife, Sandy.

A sponsored headshave and raffle is to be held at The Flower Pot on July 20 at 4pm. Sponsor forms can be picked up from The Flower Pot, Lower Hopton News and The Sandwich Shop, all in Calder Road.

A team called ‘Sam’s Wish Warriors’, headed by Kevin Rutherford, is also entering this year’s Total Warrior – a 10km endurance obstacle course in the Lake District.
