Heavy Woollen District’s first ever Rugby League Day took place on Saturday ahead of the Festival of World Cups, which is coming to our area this week.

As well as a rugby themed fun day, the 1973 cup was awarded to ex-captain Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson and other members of the squad by Mayor Martin Bolt.

The formal presentation on the town hall steps saw a performance by Dewsbury Rams Cheerleaders, a haka dance by local school children and a rematch staged by the 1973 final team mascots – Roger Ram and Ronnie Rhino.

Members of the original Dewsbury Rugby League team then watched a screening of their historic victory at the New Picture House.
