Dignity in care report backs findings of Reporter Series campaign

THe issue of basic care for the elderly has been raised nationally a week after the Reporter Series’ began its Dignity at DDH campaign.

The Commission on Improving Dignity in Care has today published its draft report into the care elderly people receive in hospitals and care homes.

It backs the findings our articles with patients and their families, showing a lack of basic care is not just a local one.

The commission said: “Like many others, we’ve been deeply saddened by reports highlighting the undignified care of older people in our hospitals and care homes. In too many cases, people have been let down when they were vulnerable and most needed help. Older people and their loved ones deserve so much better.

“We know there are some hospitals and care homes providing great care, and we need to learn from them to get dignified care right for every person every time.”

It goes on to make 10 recommendations for hospitals and 10 for care homes.

They include staff taking responsibility for putting a patient’s care first, working closer with an older person’s family and carers and making maintaining a patient’s independence a priority.
