A fond farewell

SHE’s spent nearly 40 years looking after staff, patients and visitors at the area’s hospitals, but now Betty Corrigan is hanging up her uniform and looking forward to retirement.

Betty, 75, started working as a cleaner at the old Staincliffe Hospital in 1974 and began preparing meals in the staff canteen when the hospital was moved to its current site in the late 1980s.

Since then Betty has worked in the hospital’s White Rose Restaurant, where a retirement party was held for her on Thursday.

“I’ve met so many nice people who have worked here over the years, and I have really enjoyed all my time here,” she said.

Betty, who lives in Purlwell, Batley, said it was her enjoyment of the job that had kept her working so long.

She said: “I’ve always enjoyed coming to work as I like the company and the people here; there’s always something going on. Just working at the hospital makes you think you are helping the poorly in some way.”

Jayne Kilroy, catering manager at the restaurant, said Betty would be missed.

She added: “Betty has been a very valuable member of staff for the last 36 years and she will be missed by all of us.”

Speaking of how she will spend her retirement, Betty said she would find something to do.

“I like walking and seeing different places,” she said.
